NerdSync Privacy Policy

NerdSync ("we", "our", "us") operates the NerdSync mobile application (the "App"). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using NerdSync you agree to this policy.

1. Who we are

NerdSync is a friend-matching and community app for adult nerds, gamers, and hobbyists aged 18 and over. Contact: support@nerdsync.app.

2. Information we collect

You provide directly:

• Email address and password (hashed with bcrypt)
• Display name and username
• Date of birth (used only to verify you are 18+)
• Profile photo, gallery photos, bio, interests, vibe scores
• Optional selfie and government ID photos for identity verification
• Messages you send to other users
• Reports you file against other users

Collected automatically:

• Approximate location (fuzzy coordinates, never exact) when you grant permission
• Device type, OS version, app version
• Crash reports and error logs
• In-app activity (matches, connections, messages sent, last-active timestamps)

From third parties:

• Subscription and purchase status from RevenueCat, Apple App Store, or Google Play

3. How we use your information

• Match you with compatible users and show you in other users' Discover feeds
• Verify you are 18 or older
• Deliver messages between connected users
• Compute your trust score and verification level
• Process subscription payments
• Investigate reports, enforce community guidelines, and remove bad actors
• Send important service notifications (safety alerts, account changes)
• Improve the App and fix bugs

4. How location works

We never store your exact location. When you grant location permission, we immediately offset the coordinates by 0.5–1.5 miles before saving them. We only use location to show you other users within a configurable radius.

5. Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with:

• Other NerdSync users — your public profile (display name, photos, bio, interests, approximate location, verification level) is visible to other users. Your email, date of birth, and private messages are never shown publicly.
• Service providers — MongoDB Atlas (database hosting), Railway (app hosting), RevenueCat (subscription management), Expo / EAS (build and push notifications), Apple and Google (app stores and payment processing).
• Law enforcement — only when legally required by valid subpoena, warrant, or court order.

6. Data retention

We keep your account data as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, photos, messages, and connections within 30 days. Some anonymized analytics and required legal records may be retained longer.

7. Your rights

You can at any time:

• Access and export your data by emailing privacy@nerdsync.app
• Correct or update your profile from inside the App
• Delete your account from Settings → Account → Delete Account, or visit our deletion page
• Opt out of non-essential notifications from device Settings
• Turn on Safer Mode to filter your visibility and discoverability

California residents have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what personal information we collect and to request deletion. EU and UK residents have rights under the GDPR, including access, rectification, erasure, portability, and objection. Email privacy@nerdsync.app to exercise any right.

8. Security

Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Data is transmitted over HTTPS. Access to our backend is limited to authorized team members. No system is perfectly secure — if you suspect a breach of your account, email us immediately.

9. Children

NerdSync is strictly 18+. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we delete it immediately. If you believe a minor is using NerdSync, please report the account via the App or email safety@nerdsync.app.

10. Changes to this policy

We will post any material changes to this page and update the date at the top. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated policy.
